Sagi-shima Dining Table
The 3rd Asian architecture students summer workshop | Sagi-shima, Japan | Upcycling craft | 2018
The workshop was the result of the collaboration between ADAN of Japan and my school, RUFA.
I participated in one of the three courses where we went to a small and remote island just off the coast of mainland Japan. The village was seeing too many emigrations which was causing a decline in population, school closure and an almost non existent public life.
Our task was to curate a weekend gathering event that would attract and incentivize people to spend more time outdoor together that in turn would hopefully revive the sense of community in the neighborhood.
Our site was set on a beach in front of the closed school in which we used the gym as our building and assembling workshop. While our team of students, 2 groups of 5, were working on designing and building new furnitures, a group of local volunteers were coming up with a new menu of dishes to cater for the party.
Using the leftover materials we collected around the island, we were able to make some moveable lightweight beach furnitures which can be put away in the shed nearby when not in use. The lounge chair, a last minute design of mine, proved to be a popular choice for the small children.
Studio led by Nao-San of Tsumiki Sekkei.
